The Irish famine of the 1840's brought many thousands of Irish to the city of St. John. Trade with Britain and the U.S. brought not only rapid growth to St John but also the "Knickerbocker Rules of Baseball". By the 1870's the game had become a popular recreation among the city's working class and by 1874, a citywide association consisting of four teams including the Marathons was formed.
